TVK Makes Inroads in Madurai District

In Madurai district, the political contest has become more competitive in the current Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with both established parties and new entrants showing strong performances.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, the two major Dravidian parties — Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) — each won 5 out of the 10 constituencies in the district.
However, in the current election, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has made a strong entry in several constituencies in Madurai.
TVK is showing strong performance in key seats, including Madurai East and Madurai Central, where sitting ministers P. Moorthy and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan are currently trailing in second place.
In Melur constituency, Indian National Congress candidate P. Viswanathan has already been declared the winner with 54,815 votes.
The results in Madurai district indicate a changing political trend, with TVK emerging as a strong challenger to the traditional dominance of DMK and AIADMK in the region.
While counting is still ongoing in some areas, the early outcomes suggest a more competitive political landscape in Madurai this election year.
