Kamal Haasan Slams Delay in Inviting Vijay
Tamil Nadu’s historic three-cornered Assembly election has created major political debate after TVK, led by actor-politician Vijay, emerged as the single largest party by winning 108 seats.
TVK secured 34.92% of the vote in its very first election, making it the largest standalone party in the state without the DMK or AIADMK for the first time since 1967.
Despite this major victory, TVK did not secure an absolute majority, resulting in a hung Assembly.
This has led to growing controversy after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar delayed inviting Vijay to form the government, even though TVK is the largest party.
Vijay had already met the Governor in person and formally staked his claim to form the government.
He reportedly met the Governor again for a second time, but no official invitation to take oath as Chief Minister has yet been issued.
Makkal Needhi Maiam leader and actor Kamal Haasan strongly criticized the delay.
Kamal Haasan said that not inviting the leader of the single largest party to form the government is an insult to democracy and the people’s mandate.
He reminded authorities of the famous S.R. Bommai Supreme Court judgment, which states that the majority of a government should be tested on the Assembly floor, not decided at Raj Bhavan.
According to Kamal Haasan, the Governor’s role is constitutional, and delaying the invitation raises serious concerns about democratic fairness.
His statement adds to growing criticism from political leaders and public figures who believe the democratic process must be respected.
As Tamil Nadu waits for a final decision on government formation, the political atmosphere remains tense, with increasing pressure on constitutional authorities to act quickly.
