Chennai Super Kings Need to Win All Remaining Matches to Stay Alive
May 16 (Reuters) – Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has stated that his team needs to win all their remaining matches in the Indian Premier League to stay in contention for the playoffs. After losing by seven wickets to the already-eliminated Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai is currently sixth in the standings with six wins out of 12 games.
The five-time champions had a strong start recently, winning three consecutive matches earlier this month. However, their loss on Friday dropped them to sixth place. To secure a spot in the playoffs, they must win both remaining matches and improve their net run rate. With eight teams still mathematically in contention for the top four and 11 games left in the league phase, every match is crucial.
Gaikwad emphasized the importance of adapting to conditions quickly and stressed that the team’s focus is on winning each game. “We need to make sure we have a good day and make it count,” he said after the match in Lucknow. “We hope to turn things around.”
Despite inconsistencies in their middle order, the emergence of young player Kartik Sharma has been a positive sign. His recent performance, including a score of 71 against Lucknow, has boosted the team’s confidence. Gaikwad expressed optimism about the batting and bowling departments, stating that the team is performing well overall.
Chennai will next face third-placed Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday.
