ICC Suspends Funding for Cricket Canada Amid Governance Issues

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has stopped funding Cricket Canada for the next six months due to concerns about how it is run. This decision will cause a major financial problem for the organization, which relies heavily on ICC support.

Cricket Canada was told about the suspension earlier this week. However, it will not affect activities like national team training or high-performance programs.

The ICC did not explain why it suspended funding, but Canadian media recently reported that Cricket Canada may have broken some of the ICC’s rules. These include issues with how money is managed and problems with decision-making standards.

This comes after a tough year for Cricket Canada, which has faced several administrative and integrity-related issues. For example, its match against New Zealand in the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is being investigated by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit.

There have also been claims that former head coach Khurram Chohan was pressured to choose certain players for the national team. This came from a leaked phone recording where he said senior board members tried to influence decisions.

Cricket Canada has had leadership problems too, including the appointment and removal of former CEO Salman Khan, who is facing criminal charges. Arvinder Khosa recently became president after serving as interim leader.

The ICC’s decision happened after Cricket Canada’s annual meeting in May, where the board announced reforms as part of a plan to improve how it is run. A new nine-member board was also elected during the meeting.

Neither the ICC nor Cricket Canada has officially commented on the suspension so far.
