Authorities in Tiruvallur district have rescued 39 migrant workers from Odisha who were allegedly kept in poor and exploitative conditions at a brick kiln in Vannipakkam village near Ponneri.
The rescue operation was carried out after officials received information about possible labour exploitation at the site. A joint team of Revenue Department officials and the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) visited the brick kiln to inspect the working conditions and verify complaints.
During the inspection, officials found that the workers were living and working in difficult conditions. The labourers, who had come from Odisha in search of employment, were reportedly facing poor treatment and were not being provided proper facilities or freedom of movement.
Following the inspection, all 39 workers were safely rescued and brought out of the brick kiln. Officials ensured that they were given immediate support and protection. Arrangements are being made to provide them with basic needs such as food, shelter, and medical care.
Authorities have also begun further inquiry into the brick kiln management to check whether labour laws were violated. Action is expected against those responsible if exploitation or illegal practices are confirmed.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of migrant workers in unregulated workplaces. Officials said that regular inspections will continue to prevent such exploitation and protect the rights of workers coming from other states in search of jobs.
