Kinahan Extradited to Ireland

A plane arrived in Ireland on Sunday (August 9, 2026) carrying Daniel Kinahan, a man accused of leading a major criminal group. He was extradited from Dubai and will face trial in Ireland for serious organized crime charges.

Kinahan had been held in Dubai since his arrest in April. Ireland had requested his extradition due to alleged crimes related to drug trafficking and money laundering. The 49-year-old, who is originally from Ireland, is believed to have run a powerful criminal network based in Dubai.

A special Irish government plane brought Kinahan to Ireland, landing at a military base west of Dublin. He was then taken directly to the Special Criminal Court in Dublin, where he will be charged with directing an organized crime group.

The Kinahan Organized Crime Group (KOCG) is considered one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Ireland, with assets estimated at over €1 billion. The U.S. government had also targeted Kinahan, offering a $5 million reward for his capture.

Irish and UAE officials praised the extradition as a significant step in combating international organized crime. Irish Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan called it a “landmark of judicial cooperation.”

Security was tight during Kinahan’s transfer. He was escorted by police, armed forces, and prison staff using a specially designed armored vehicle. Kinahan is expected to be held at Portlaoise Prison, Ireland’s most secure facility.

Kinahan moved to Dubai around 2016 after surviving an assassination attempt in Dublin. He lived openly there until his arrest in April. Sean McGovern, another senior member of the cartel, was extradited from Dubai earlier and sentenced to 24 years in prison last year.

The case highlights Ireland’s efforts to tackle organized crime and its ability to cooperate with international partners to bring criminals to justice.
