Teddy Bridgewater Retires Again as Detroit Lions Look for Backup QB

The Detroit Lions are now searching for a new backup quarterback after Teddy Bridgewater announced his retirement from the NFL. The 33-year-old player, who was part of the team’s training camp, decided to step away just weeks into it. This is the second time Bridgewater has retired; he previously stepped back after the 2023 season but returned the next year. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025 before joining the Lions again this offseason. This retirement seems final.

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell expressed his feelings about Bridgewater’s departure with emotion. He praised Bridgewater as an incredible person and teammate, noting how hard he worked and his strong heart. Campbell shared a memorable moment from their time together in New Orleans when Drew Brees was injured, and Bridgewater led the team to five straight wins.

Bridgewater was originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014 but suffered a severe knee injury in 2016 that ended his time as their starter. He later rebuilt his career with the New Orleans Saints, where he had a standout performance in 2019 filling in for Brees. This earned him a three-year contract with the Carolina Panthers in 2020.

Bridgewater played in 83 games with 65 starts across his career, completing 66.3% of his passes and earning a 90.3 passer rating. His journey reflects a player who competed hard and earned respect during his time with multiple teams.

The Lions now face the challenge of finding a new backup quarterback to support starter Jared Goff.
