US Marine Robert Gilman Released by Russia on Humanitarian Grounds

Former US Marine Robert Gilman, who had been held in Russia for more than four years, has been released on humanitarian grounds because of concerns about his health. He is now expected to return to the United States after his case received attention from his family and supporters.

US President Donald Trump announced Gilman’s release on Truth Social. Trump said he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Gilman’s situation. According to Trump, Putin agreed to release Gilman without asking the United States for anything in return.

Gilman Was Arrested in 2022

Gilman was arrested in January 2022 while travelling by train in the Russian city of Voronezh.

Reports said Russian authorities accused him of kicking a police officer while he was under the influence of alcohol. However, Gilman’s father disputed the allegations and said the charges against his son were false.

Gilman was later sentenced and remained in Russian custody for several years. During his time in prison, concerns about his health reportedly increased.

His supporters and advocates continued to call for his release, especially because of his medical condition. These concerns eventually became an important part of discussions about his case.

Former US Marine

Gilman served in the US Marine Corps from August 2019 until August 2020. His military background drew additional attention to his detention.

He was among at least 10 Americans known to have been detained in Russia. The cases of Americans held in Russia have been a sensitive issue between Washington and Moscow, particularly during a period of strained relations between the two countries.

US Welcomes His Release

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed Gilman’s release and thanked Russia for allowing him to return home.

Rubio also expressed hope that other Americans still being held in Russia could eventually be released.

Gilman’s release is being seen as a positive development in US-Russia relations, although many issues continue to create tension between the two countries.
