Tarun Tejpal Appeals 10-Year Jail Term
Journalist Tarun Tejpal, the former editor of Tehelka magazine, has approached the Supreme Court to challenge his 10-year prison sentence in a 2013 sexual assault case.
The appeal comes after the Bombay High Court sentenced him to 10 years in prison on August 6, 2026, after finding him guilty in the case.
Tejpal Challenges the Sentence
Tejpal has now asked the Supreme Court to review the High Court’s decision. His legal team is challenging the conviction and punishment handed down by the Bombay High Court.
The case dates back to 2013 and has gone through several stages in the courts over the years.
Tejpal had earlier maintained that he was innocent and described himself as a “political victim.” He also referred to his family and said he was the father of two daughters while seeking leniency.
Goa Government Seeks Stronger Punishment
The Goa government has also approached the Supreme Court, but with a different request.
The state has argued that the punishment given to Tejpal should be increased, saying the sentence was not strong enough. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta argued that a maximum punishment was necessary and could serve as a strong example in cases involving serious sexual offences.
Earlier Acquittal Was Overturned
The latest development follows an earlier decision by a trial court.
In 2021, a trial court had acquitted Tejpal in the case. The Bombay High Court later overturned that decision and convicted him.
The High Court strongly criticized the earlier judgment, describing it as “perverse.” The court also questioned the reasoning used to judge the credibility of the complainant.
Debate Over Treatment of Sexual Assault Complaints
The High Court’s observations also raised wider questions about how courts evaluate complaints in sexual assault cases.
The court criticized the idea that a person reporting sexual assault must behave in a particular way to be considered believable.
The issue has become an important part of the legal debate surrounding the case.
Supreme Court to Consider the Matter
With both Tejpal and the Goa government approaching the Supreme Court with different demands, the case is now set for another stage of legal proceedings.
Tejpal is seeking relief from the conviction and 10-year sentence, while the Goa government wants a stricter punishment.
The Supreme Court’s decision will determine the next step in the long-running case. Until the court reaches a final decision, the legal process will continue.
