Jadavpur University Clashes Explained

Tensions between student groups at Jadavpur University in Kolkata turned violent on August 20 after members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) entered the campus during a dispute with Left-linked student groups.

According to reports, ABVP members carrying sticks entered the university and removed posters belonging to the Left students’ union. Some of the posters were reportedly torn down and set on fire near Aurobindo Bhawan, the university’s main administrative building.

The incident has increased political tensions on the campus and has led to several police complaints.

Dispute Over Student Union Meeting

The disagreement between the ABVP and Left-wing student groups, including the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), reportedly began over a disputed general body meeting.

The ABVP has argued that there is no officially elected student union at the university because student union elections have not been held for several years. The issue has become a major point of disagreement between different student organisations.

Tensions reportedly increased after an earlier confrontation in which SFI supporters were accused of manhandling members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Several students were reportedly injured, including the president of the ABVP’s Jadavpur unit.

The allegations have added to the already tense atmosphere on the campus.

Confrontation on August 20

On August 20, ABVP members reportedly attempted to enter the university campus. They were opposed by SFI supporters, leading to a heated confrontation.

According to reports, objects were thrown during the clash and some university property was damaged. The university gate’s emblem was also reportedly damaged during the incident.

The situation later led to multiple First Information Reports (FIRs).

The university’s Vice-Chancellor also filed a complaint against unknown people, alleging incidents of arson, vandalism and intimidation. Police are expected to investigate the complaints and determine the exact circumstances of the violence.

University Forms Inquiry Committee

Following the incident, Jadavpur University formed an inquiry committee to examine what happened on the campus.

The committee is expected to look into the clashes, property damage and allegations made by the different groups. The university’s damaged emblem has also reportedly been repaired.

Authorities will need to establish responsibility for the violence based on evidence rather than political claims.

Jadavpur’s Political History

Jadavpur University has a long history of student activism and Left-wing politics. Established in 1955, the university has traditionally been considered an important centre of Left politics in West Bengal.

Over the years, political parties including the Trinamool Congress and the BJP have attempted to increase their influence among students. However, Left-linked student groups have continued to maintain a strong presence on the campus.

Because of this political history, disagreements between student organisations can sometimes develop into wider political conflicts.

Political Leaders React

The violence has also led to reactions from political leaders in West Bengal.

Some BJP leaders strongly criticised the Left student groups, while other political figures called for action against what they described as anti-national activities.

At the same time, some leaders warned against allowing political parties to interfere in student affairs. Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta, for example, criticised political interference in university matters.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also linked the violence to wider political debates and criticised recent comments by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding alleged “dimagi naxal” elements.

Calls for Calm

The latest clash has raised concerns about the safety of students and staff at the university.

Student organisations with different political views have a long history of activism at Jadavpur University. However, violence and damage to university property have created concerns about the future of campus politics.

The inquiry committee and police investigation are now expected to establish what happened during the confrontation and identify those responsible for any violence or damage.

The incident has once again highlighted the strong political character of Jadavpur University and the continuing tensions between rival student groups in West Bengal.

As the investigation continues, there are growing calls for political differences to be handled through peaceful discussion rather than violence.
