Harry Brook’s 114 Leads England to Win Against Sri Lanka

England produced a dominant performance to defeat Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20I at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. A brilliant unbeaten century from Harry Brook helped England post a huge total of 254/4, before their bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to 135.

England made a strong start with the bat, scoring 90/1 during the powerplay. Jos Buttler played an important innings, scoring 80 runs before he was dismissed. Brook then took control of the match with an outstanding display of attacking batting.

Brook reached his century in just 42 balls and finished unbeaten on 114 from 49 deliveries. His innings included 10 fours and six sixes, giving him an impressive strike rate of 232.65. His aggressive batting helped England maintain a high scoring rate throughout the innings.

Will Jacks also contributed late in the innings, scoring 21 runs and helping England finish with 254 runs for four wickets. The total gave Sri Lanka a difficult target to chase.

Sri Lanka’s reply got off to a poor start as they lost three wickets during the powerplay. The early setbacks put them under pressure, and they were unable to build the partnerships needed to challenge England’s total.

Dunith Wellalage was Sri Lanka’s highest scorer with 33 runs, while Dasun Shanaka added 24. However, the rest of the batting lineup struggled against England’s bowling attack. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 135 in 19 overs.

England’s bowlers maintained control throughout the second innings. Sonny Baker was particularly effective, taking 3 wickets for just 12 runs. Jamie Overton and Liam Dawson also contributed with two wickets each.

Brook was named Player of the Match for his career-best T20I performance. His unbeaten 114 not only powered England to a record-breaking total in the match but also gave the team a comfortable victory in the opening game of the series.

England’s white-ball setup has also been receiving guidance from former international star Kevin Pietersen, who has joined the team as a specialist mentor. The team will look to build on this performance as it prepares for major international competitions, including the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
