Bangladesh Garment Workers Protest for Second Day
Garment workers in Bangladesh continued their protests for a second day on Monday in areas including Dhaka, Gazipur and Ashulia. The workers are demanding higher wages, fair treatment and the reinstatement of employees who were dismissed from their jobs. The protests have disrupted traffic and affected factory operations across several areas.
In Gazipur, hundreds of workers blocked roads on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, causing heavy traffic jams. The government deployed security forces, including Border Guard Bangladesh personnel and police, to control the situation and manage the crowds.
In Ashulia, police used tear gas and water cannons to prevent workers from blocking highways. Similar protests took place in the Mirpur area of Dhaka, where police stopped workers from continuing their march. The security measures were taken as authorities tried to restore normal movement in the affected areas.
The protests began on Sunday and were followed by violent clashes, road blockades and damage to property. The unrest has affected factory operations, with at least 529 garment factories reportedly forced to close due to the disturbances.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed held a meeting with industry leaders and warned that people involved in violence would face serious consequences. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities to protect workers’ rights while ensuring that factory production and exports continue without interruption.
The ongoing protests have raised concerns about workers’ welfare, factory operations and Bangladesh’s garment industry. The situation remains tense as workers continue to demand better wages and fair treatment, while the government seeks to restore peace and maintain economic activity.
