Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday requested Andhra Pradesh to release more water to Chennai to meet the city’s drinking water needs. However, the Andhra Pradesh government did not give any assurance and said it would consider the request based on the availability of water in the Krishna River and the State’s own requirements.

Mr. Vijay met Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu at his camp office in Vijayawada on Tuesday. During the meeting, the two Chief Ministers discussed important water-related issues between the neighbouring States.

One of the main topics was the supply of Krishna River water to Chennai for drinking purposes. Tamil Nadu requested additional water to help meet the city’s drinking water needs. However, the Andhra Pradesh government said that any decision on releasing more water would depend on the amount of water available in the Krishna River and the water requirements of Andhra Pradesh.

The two leaders also discussed the proposed Godavari-Cauvery river linkage project. The project aims to transfer water from the Godavari River to the Cauvery River to help address water shortages in parts of southern India. The proposal is considered important for improving water availability in Tamil Nadu and other regions.

The meeting highlighted the need for cooperation between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to manage shared water resources. However, Chennai’s request for additional Krishna water remains under consideration, with Andhra Pradesh yet to confirm whether it will release more water.
