Chennai: Internal tensions within the AIADMK are increasing as a group of senior leaders has begun questioning the leadership of party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The rebel faction is reportedly trying to use provisions in the party’s bylaws to challenge his position.
This group is led by senior leaders C. Ve. Shanmugam and SP Velumani. They are studying party rules that allow members of the general council to call for a special meeting if at least one-fifth of the council members support the request.
According to these rules, the general secretary must call a special general council meeting within 30 days if such a request is officially submitted. The dissident leaders are considering using this provision as a way to pressure the party leadership.
Sources say the rebel group believes that a formal general council meeting could open the door for discussions on leadership issues and party decisions. They are trying to gather support from other senior members within the organization.
Meanwhile, supporters of Edappadi K. Palaniswami maintain that the party is united under his leadership. They argue that internal disagreements should be resolved within the party framework and not create public confusion.
The situation highlights growing differences within the AIADMK, one of Tamil Nadu’s major political parties. As discussions continue, the next steps will depend on how much support the rebel faction is able to gather in the coming days.
