Amit Bhatia: The Businessman Behind Liverpool’s Minority Stake Deal
A group led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia has agreed to purchase a minority stake in English Premier League club Liverpool. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the current owner of Liverpool, will sell 30% of the club to 1892 Holdings, which is managed by Bhatia.
The deal aims to support Liverpool’s long-term goals by bringing in global experts from business, technology, and investment. The consortium includes major figures like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. FSG will keep majority control and operational authority over the club.
Amit Bhatia, born in London in 1979, studied economics at Cornell University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2001. He has worked with top investment firms before starting his own businesses. He is the managing director of AyBe Capital Advisers and a founding partner of Summix Capital.
Bhatia also has experience in construction materials, serving as executive chairman of Hope Construction Materials until it was acquired by Breedon Group. After the acquisition, he joined Breedon’s board and held various roles, including deputy chair.
Previously involved with Queens Park Rangers (QPR) for 18 seasons, Bhatia co-owned and directed the club from 2007 until 2026. QPR returned to the Premier League in the 2011-12 season after a long absence.
Bhatia’s investment in Liverpool comes during a period of change for the team. Liverpool is rebuilding after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign and has a new manager, Andoni Iraola. Bhatia expressed pride in investing in Liverpool and praised FSG’s achievements at Anfield, committing to support the club’s future success.
