Assam Government Plans Special Course for Foreigners’ Tribunal Judges

The Assam government is set to organize a special course for judges of the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FT) in response to concerns raised by the Guwahati High Court. An affidavit filed by the state Home Department revealed that in approximately 85% of cases referred to FTs, the petitioners were later declared citizens. FTs are quasi-judicial bodies responsible for hearing cases of suspected illegal immigrants and determining their citizenship status.

The High Court expressed apprehension that FT orders were often approved without adequate consideration and justification. The government aims to address this issue through a crash course for FT members, emphasizing a thorough analysis of documentation and proper justification in their decisions.
