Cabinet Approves Salary Increase for Government Employees
The Union Cabinet has approved a 3% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for central government employees and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners. The decision is expected to benefit more than 1.17 crore employees and pensioners across the country. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision and said the move would provide financial support to beneficiaries ahead of Diwali.
Dearness Allowance is provided to government employees to help them manage the rising cost of living. Dearness Relief serves a similar purpose for retired government employees who receive pensions. The increase is intended to help beneficiaries deal with changes in the prices of essential goods and services.
The announcement is important for millions of government employees and pensioners who depend on their salaries and pensions to meet household expenses. The additional amount may help them manage spending on food, healthcare, transport and other daily needs. The exact increase in monthly payments will depend on an employee’s basic salary or a pensioner’s eligible basic pension.
In another major decision, the Union Cabinet approved a Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme with a budget of ₹10,000 crore over the next ten years. The scheme aims to strengthen India’s container manufacturing industry and encourage domestic production.
Containers play an important role in transporting goods through ships, trains and trucks. They are widely used in international trade and help businesses move products between different countries. Increasing domestic container production could support India’s logistics sector and reduce dependence on imported containers.
The scheme is also expected to encourage investment in manufacturing facilities, improve industrial capacity and create opportunities for businesses involved in container production and related activities. A stronger domestic industry could help support India’s growing trade and transport requirements over the coming years.
The Cabinet also approved an allocation of ₹7,395 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Gram Swaraj Yojana. The programme focuses on improving local planning and strengthening the ability of local institutions to carry out development activities.
Unlike schemes that follow a fixed set of instructions from higher levels of government, this approach places greater emphasis on local needs, planning and capacity building. It aims to help local institutions identify their development priorities and prepare suitable plans for their communities.
The funding is expected to support improvements in planning skills, administrative capacity and coordination at the local level. Strengthening these areas can help local bodies identify problems, use available resources effectively and carry out development projects according to community requirements.
These Cabinet decisions cover three important areas: financial support for government employees and pensioners, the growth of domestic manufacturing and the improvement of local governance. Together, the measures reflect the government’s efforts to provide financial relief, strengthen India’s industrial sector and improve development planning at the grassroots level.
