California Couple Arrested in Son-in-Law’s Park Shooting

A 76-year-old couple from California was arrested for the murder of their son-in-law, who was shot dead in a city park over the weekend. Authorities said the victim had been involved in a heated custody battle with their daughter.

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old gaming engineer at The New York Times, was found dead in the parking lot of a sports complex in Dublin on September 26, 2026. A police sergeant spotted him lying on the ground while witnesses called 911 and identified the couple still near the scene.

Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen were taken into custody on charges including murder. They are scheduled to appear in court on September 30. It’s unclear if they have legal representation, as their daughter, Candice Jang, could not be reached for comment.

The killing happened just days before a hearing was set for McKinsey and Jang’s divorce case. The couple had been married since around 2012 and had three young children.

Court records show that in 2023, Jang reported McKinsey to police, accusing him of rough treatment towards their children. Last October, she obtained a domestic violence restraining order after McKinsey was charged with misdemeanor child abuse in another case. He had been out on bail and attempting to join a mental health program.

McKinsey filed for divorce and sought more custody time, claiming Jang’s supervision limited his visits to two hours weekly since last fall. He also accused her of using anti-LGBTQ+ slurs and being abusive during medical procedures related to his transition.

McKinsey joined The New York Times in 2023 and worked as a director of engineering based in the San Francisco Bay Area. The company declined to comment further on the case.
