Can a Committee Identify Real Activists of the Telangana Movement?

Twelve years after the formation of Telangana, the state government has set up a high-level committee to identify and recognize people who took part in the Telangana statehood movement. The committee was created through a Government Order issued on May 15 and is expected to ensure that those who contributed to the movement receive proper recognition.

The committee is headed by K. Keshava Rao, who serves as an advisor to the Telangana government. Other members include Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, MLCs M. Kodandaram and Addanki Dayakar, former MLC Ramulu Naik, and Congress leader Mothe Shoban Reddy. The Secretary of the General Administration Department (Political) will supervise and coordinate the committee’s work.

One of the committee’s main responsibilities is to identify people who actively participated in the Telangana movement. It will prepare and verify official lists of movement activists and martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the struggle for a separate state.

The panel will also recommend suitable awards, honours, and other forms of recognition for those who played an important role in the movement. In addition, it will decide which groups of participants should be officially recognized by the government based on their contribution.

The Telangana statehood movement lasted for many years and involved thousands of students, employees, political leaders, and members of the public. Their efforts eventually led to the formation of Telangana as India’s 29th state on June 2, 2014.

The state government said the committee has been formed to ensure that the contributions and sacrifices of those involved in the movement are properly documented and remembered. The initiative is expected to bring long-awaited recognition to many activists and the families of those who lost their lives during the struggle for a separate Telangana.
