Canada Warns Against Alberta Separation Amid US Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has warned that the United States could be trying to weaken Canada’s unity and increase its influence over the country. He urged people in Alberta to support a united Canada and oppose efforts that could lead to the province’s separation.

The debate comes ahead of a planned referendum in Alberta, a province known for its large oil reserves and important role in Canada’s energy industry. The proposed vote is not directly about declaring independence. Instead, it is intended to ask voters whether Alberta should remain part of Canada or move towards further discussions about separation.

Speaking at a pro-Canada rally in Calgary, Carney described the timing of the referendum as the “worst possible moment.” He said Canada was facing growing international tensions and warned that the country needed unity to deal with external challenges.

Although Carney did not directly name the United States in his remarks, his comments came amid ongoing trade disagreements between the two countries. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken about the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st state of the United States, adding to concerns about the future of relations between the neighbouring countries.

Carney asked Albertans not to use the referendum simply as a way to express their frustration with the federal government in Ottawa. He warned that a clear result could have lasting consequences for Canada’s political future and create uncertainty for people living in Alberta and other parts of the country.

The prime minister, who was born in Alberta, spent time campaigning across the province before addressing supporters in Calgary. During his visit, he acknowledged that many Albertans feel their concerns have not received enough attention from the federal government. He recognised the need to address these frustrations while encouraging residents to remain part of Canada.

At the rally, Carney also highlighted examples of cooperation between Canadians from different regions and backgrounds. He pointed to the support people across the country have provided during wildfires and other emergencies as examples of the strong connections that exist between communities.

The debate over Alberta’s future comes at a time when Canada is dealing with trade tensions, economic concerns and uncertainty in its relationship with the United States. Carney’s message focused on the importance of national unity as the province considers its political future.

As discussions around the referendum continue, Alberta’s relationship with the federal government and the wider question of Canadian unity are expected to remain important issues in the country’s political debate.
