Canada’s Immigration Minister Responds to Jaishankar’s Remarks

Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller has refuted External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s statement that Ottawa is “lax” about admitting people into the country. Miller emphasized that Canada conducts criminal record checks on individuals entering the country on student visas, ensuring stringent measures. Responding to Jaishankar’s remarks, Miller stated that the Indian Foreign Minister is entitled to his opinion but highlighted that Canada takes such reports seriously.

He declined to confirm if the three Indian nationals arrested for Nijjar’s murder were on student visas, citing an ongoing police investigation. The ties between India and Canada have been strained following allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s killing. However, Jaishankar asserted that the situation in Canada regarding Nijjar’s murder is primarily due to internal vote bank politics and not India’s involvement.
