Chennai Corporation Lowers Street Light Heights to Enhance Visibility and Preserve Trees

The Greater Chennai Corporation has initiated a project to reduce the height of streetlights from 8 meters to 5 meters, with the aim of improving lighting, protecting trees, and enhancing the city’s greenery. This move comes after extensive tree pruning was conducted in preparation for the monsoon season to prevent foliage from obstructing streetlights.

Approximately 471 bus route roads and 35,000 streets in the city have trees that require regular trimming to maintain adequate lighting. This reduction in streetlight height has also resulted in a conversion from 110 W to 90 W streetlight fittings, contributing to power savings for the corporation. This effort not only enhances visibility but also reduces the glare of streetlights, making driving safer along these routes.
