Chennai Grapples with Road Damage and Water Woes After Heavy Rainfall

The recent spell of rain in Chennai has left its mark, with damaged roads and water stagnation reported in various areas. Following intense showers, concerns arose in localities such as Nethaji Road, Third Cross Street, Ponniammanmedu, and MRC Nagar due to water stagnation. Residents on the third main road of AGS Colony, Velachery, raised alarms about sewage water mixing with rainwater, causing overflow and unpleasant odors.

In addition to the water-related issues, residents in Srinivasa Nagar in Ram Nagar, Madipakkam, near the Jeeva railway station in Vyasarpadi, and at the entrance of the dump yard in Kodungaiyur reported damaged roads, leading to traffic congestion and delays, particularly for students. J. Radhakrishnan, Commissioner of the Greater Chennai Corporation, acknowledged the road damage challenges during continuous rain and assured swift action, ordering necessary patchworks with bitumen (BT) and cement.

He addressed water stagnation concerns, stating that vulnerable areas are closely monitored, and prompt clearing measures, including night operations, are in place to alleviate inundations caused by factors like garbage blockages and sewage discharge.
