Chennai’s Cattle Challenge: Policy Measures Considered After Fatal Attack
The Greater Chennai Corporation is contemplating a policy-level intervention to address the pressing issue of cattle attacks on city streets, spurred by the recent death of an elderly man in Nanganallur. Despite impounding 67 animals in the last 10 days, with fines totaling ₹75,000 imposed in 2024 alone, the problem persists.
Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan highlighted the legal challenges in curbing the cattle population under existing regulations, emphasizing the need for more implementable laws. Suggestions include halting license issuance to owners lacking adequate space for their animals and establishing designated areas in outer regions, collecting fees for cattle accommodation.
The corporation also plans educational programs for cattle owners to enhance awareness and adherence to regulations, addressing the root causes of the issue. Increased fines for offenders and repairs to shelters further underscore the multifaceted approach to tackling this ongoing challenge.
