China Affirms Intent to Defend Rights in South China Sea

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi reiterated China’s commitment to “legitimately defend” its rights in the South China Sea amid escalating tensions with the Philippines over disputed waters. Despite competing claims from Southeast Asian nations and an international arbitration ruling against China’s stance, Beijing asserts sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea.

Wang emphasized China’s historical restraint in maritime disputes but warned against the abuse of goodwill or infringement of maritime laws. Recent clashes between Chinese and Philippine vessels have heightened tensions, with China accusing the Philippines of illegal intrusion and Manila condemning China’s actions as provocative. Amidst this backdrop, Wang called on external parties, without naming the United States, to refrain from exacerbating tensions in the region and urged against interference in South China Sea disputes.
