Cricket-Green Struggles as Kolkata Aims for Turnaround

Kolkata Knight Riders remain hopeful about their star player Cameron Green despite his slow start in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The team, currently winless and at the bottom of the IPL table, has high expectations from Green, who is their most expensive overseas signing at $2.77 million.

Green, a 26-year-old all-rounder from Australia, signed to help Kolkata secure a third title, has yet to meet those expectations. After recovering from a lower back injury, he played three matches as a batter but managed only 56 runs in five innings. In his most recent game against Chennai Super Kings, he struggled both with the bat and ball, scoring just four runs and conceding 30 runs in two overs.

Despite Green’s difficulties, Kolkata’s bowling coach Tim Southee remains optimistic. “He hasn’t had the start he wanted, but he’s a quality player,” Southee said. “We’re confident he’ll bounce back.”

Kolkata’s challenges are compounded by injuries. They lost key players Harshit Rana and Akash Deep to injuries and are waiting for Sri Lankan seamer Matheesha Pathirana to recover from a calf injury. Their pace attack is weakened further due to diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh, forcing them to omit overseas seamer Mustafizur Rahman.

Kartik Tyagi was the only bright spot in their recent match against Chennai, claiming two wickets for 35 runs. Despite this, Kolkata’s inconsistent performance has kept them out of playoff contention.

“We’re not getting the results we want,” Southee admitted. “We’ve had glimpses of good play but not enough to win a game. The number of injuries hasn’t helped, but Kartik bowled well.”

The team hopes Green and their injured players will return strong as they aim to turn their season around.
