Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Visits Sri Lanka for Three Days
Colombo: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has started a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka with the aim of strengthening the close relationship and defence cooperation between the two countries.
Before beginning his visit, Singh highlighted the strong historical and cultural links shared by India and Sri Lanka. The two neighbouring countries have maintained close relations for many years, with cooperation covering areas such as defence, trade, development, culture and people-to-people connections.
In a message on social media, Singh said India and Sri Lanka share a special relationship based on their long history and common interests. He also highlighted India’s Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR vision, which focus on strengthening cooperation with neighbouring and Indian Ocean countries.
During his visit, Singh is expected to hold discussions with senior Sri Lankan leaders and officials. The talks are likely to cover important regional and security issues as well as ways to further improve cooperation between the two countries.
Defence cooperation is expected to be an important part of the visit. India and Sri Lanka have worked together in areas such as military training, capacity building, maritime security and defence exchanges. Both countries also conduct joint military exercises and maintain regular contact between their armed forces.
Sri Lanka’s location in the Indian Ocean makes it strategically important for India. Cooperation between the two countries can help improve maritime security and support stability in the wider Indian Ocean region.
Singh will also meet members of the Indian community living in Sri Lanka. During the interaction, he is expected to recognise their contributions and their role in strengthening the relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
The Indian community has long maintained cultural and social connections with both countries. Their activities and links with India contribute to stronger people-to-people relations.
The visit comes as India continues to strengthen its engagement with countries in the Indian Ocean region. Through its Neighbourhood First policy and MAHASAGAR approach, India has placed greater focus on cooperation, connectivity, security and development with its regional partners.
For Sri Lanka, closer cooperation with India is also important in areas such as economic development, security, infrastructure and regional connectivity.
Singh’s three-day visit is therefore expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to discuss existing cooperation and explore new areas of partnership. The meetings could further strengthen the long-standing friendship between India and Sri Lanka and support closer cooperation in the years ahead.
