ECI Announces Rajya Sabha Polls for 37 Seats
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced biennial elections for 37 Rajya Sabha seats across the country. The polling is scheduled to take place on March 16, as the terms of the current members will end in April 2026.
Among these are six seats from Tamil Nadu. The members whose terms are ending include Tiruchi Siva, NR Elango, Anthiyur P. Selvarasu, and Kanimozhi NVN Somu from the DMK, as well as M. Thambidurai from the AIADMK and G.K. Vasan from the TMC.
The announcement has gained political attention because it comes ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The timing has added a new dimension to discussions about seat-sharing among political parties. Parties are likely to carefully plan their strategies and alliances, as the Rajya Sabha elections could influence political equations in the State.
Political observers believe that negotiations between alliance partners may intensify in the coming weeks, especially regarding which party will contest how many seats. The outcome of these elections could also reflect the current strength of parties in the State Assembly.
