Encroachments Cleared from Vilinjiyampakkam Lake in Tiruvallur

The Tiruvallur district administration has initiated the removal of 270 houses and several commercial establishments encroaching on Vilinjiyampakkam lake, which is under the jurisdiction of the Water Resources Department. The eviction process has already cleared 12 commercial establishments, including a de-addiction and rehabilitation center and a catering outlet.

Families affected by the eviction have been offered alternative accommodation at Pakkam and Poochiathipedu slum board tenements. The Collector mentioned that the encroachments had taken over two hectares of the lake area. Residents from Kalaignar Nagar, VOC Nagar, and Shanmugapuram, facing eviction, have been demanding in-situ rehabilitation due to concerns about losing their livelihoods.
