Enforcement Directorate Seeks Criminal Case Against Kerala Ex- Chief Minister
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has asked the Kerala Police to register a criminal case against former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, his daughter T. Veena and his son-in-law P. A. Mohammed Riyas over alleged bribery. The request is linked to allegations of illegal payments connected with a state project.
The latest move could increase the pressure on Vijayan and his family as investigating agencies continue to examine the allegations. The ED is looking into whether money was illegally received or transferred and whether the alleged payments could be connected to money laundering.
Allegations Linked to State Project
The case centres on claims of bribery involving a project carried out in Kerala. Investigators are examining financial transactions and other information to determine whether any illegal payments were made in connection with the project.
The ED’s request to the Kerala Police is an important step because a criminal case would allow the state police to carry out a separate investigation into the allegations. Investigators may examine documents, financial records and statements from people connected with the matter.
However, the allegations are still part of an investigation. A request to register a case does not by itself prove that any of the people named have committed a crime.
Vijayan and Family Deny Wrongdoing
Pinarayi Vijayan and members of his family have denied allegations of wrongdoing. They have maintained that there is no basis for the accusations against them.
The issue has also become a political controversy in Kerala. Vijayan is a senior leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), which currently leads the Left Democratic Front government in the state.
The party has criticised the action and described the case as a politically motivated attack. CPI(M) leaders have questioned the timing of the investigation and rejected the allegations made against Vijayan and his family.
ED Continues Money-Laundering Probe
The Enforcement Directorate is separately examining whether the alleged bribery has any connection with money laundering. The agency has the power to investigate financial transactions and trace money that it believes may have come from illegal activities.
Investigators are expected to examine the source and movement of the money mentioned in the allegations. They may also look at financial records and transactions involving people or organisations connected to the project.
The investigation could take time as authorities collect documents and question individuals who may have information about the alleged transactions.
Political Impact in Kerala
The development is likely to create further political debate in Kerala. Pinarayi Vijayan remains one of the state’s most prominent political leaders, and any investigation involving him or his family is expected to attract significant attention.
Opposition parties are likely to use the allegations to question the former chief minister and his government’s handling of state projects. The CPI(M), meanwhile, is expected to continue defending Vijayan and his family while accusing political opponents of using investigative agencies against its leaders.
Investigation Still Underway
At this stage, the allegations have not been established in court. The Kerala Police and the Enforcement Directorate will need to examine the available evidence before reaching conclusions.
The latest request by the ED could lead to a wider investigation if the Kerala Police registers a criminal case. Authorities are expected to continue examining the alleged financial transactions and the circumstances surrounding the state project.
The case is therefore likely to remain an important political and legal issue in Kerala, with further developments expected as the investigations continue.
