FIFA Apologizes Over Scrapped World Cup Rights Plan

FIFA has apologized to its member nations after abandoning a controversial plan to sell commercial rights linked to the World Cup. The proposal, which aimed to sell a 20% stake in a new company for around $4.2 billion, faced strong opposition and was withdrawn last Friday.

During a meeting in Morocco, FIFA’s leadership reaffirmed their support for President Gianni Infantino, despite criticism over the plan. Internal memos criticized the handling of the project, with one FIFA official calling it a “sad and reproachable series of events.”

The proposal sparked anger from UEFA and other groups, who accused FIFA of acting without proper consultation. Many European nations have withdrawn their support for Infantino, while some African and Asian associations remain loyal.

FIFA has promised to review its processes and ensure member associations are included in future decisions. Despite the backlash, Infantino’s re-election in 2026 remains likely, as no strong challenger has emerged.
