Haryana Holds All-Party Meeting Today Over Growing Water Dispute with Punjab
The Haryana government has called an all-party meeting today to discuss the growing water dispute with Punjab. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini invited leaders from all political parties in the state to take part in the meeting and share their views.
The conflict between Haryana and Punjab over the sharing of river water, especially from the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, has increased in recent weeks. Haryana has repeatedly asked Punjab to release its share of water, but Punjab has refused, saying it does not have enough water to spare.
Chief Minister Saini said the water crisis affects farmers, drinking water supplies, and daily life in many parts of Haryana. He added that the state must act quickly to protect the rights of its people. “We need a united voice on this issue. That is why we have called this meeting,” he said.
Leaders from major political parties like the BJP, Congress, INLD, and AAP are expected to attend. They will discuss legal options, future steps, and ways to pressure the central government to help resolve the issue.
The Supreme Court has already ruled in favor of Haryana several times, asking Punjab to complete the SYL canal and share the water. But Punjab has delayed the work, leading to frustration and anger in Haryana.
The water shortage has affected thousands of farmers in Haryana, especially in the southern and central regions. Many villages are facing drought-like conditions, and farmers are struggling to grow crops. The government has promised to help, but it says Punjab must follow the law and release the water.
Officials said today’s meeting will focus on building political unity in Haryana and forming a strong plan to take up the issue with the central government. The state hopes to send a clear message that it will not stay silent while its people suffer from water shortages.
