INDIA Bloc Marches in Delhi Demanding CEC’s Removal
The INDIA bloc held a ‘Chalo Delhi’ march towards the Supreme Court on Monday, October 12, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Several leaders from the INDIA bloc took part in the march, which was among the largest protests witnessed in Delhi in recent days. The protesters called for action against the Chief Election Commissioner and raised concerns over the revision of electoral rolls. AISA leader Neha Bora was also among those participating in the demonstration.
The protest took place on a day when the government had withdrawn Jantar Mantar’s status as an authorised protest site. The move came amid heightened political activity in the national capital.
More than 30,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across Delhi to maintain law and order and manage the large gathering. Despite the heavy security presence, the number of protesters was reported to be higher than that of the security personnel at the march.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant had declined a request from Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for a meeting on Monday.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Justice Surya Kant confirmed that he had received a letter from Gandhi and had sent a reply on Sunday night. He said he had explained the reasons for being unable to attend the proposed meeting but refused to share further details about the contents of his response.
“I received his letter yesterday. I replied to it last night itself. I have given some reasons in it, on the basis of which I have expressed my inability to attend the meeting,” he said.
The march and the demands raised by the INDIA bloc added to the political tensions surrounding the electoral roll revision and the demand for the Chief Election Commissioner’s removal.
