India’s EV Registrations Cross Two Lakh in January

India’s electric vehicle (EV) industry has started the new year strongly. In January 2026, total registrations of battery-electric vehicles crossed 2 lakh units.

This marks the fourth month in a row that EV registrations have exceeded 2 lakh, even though GST rates on petrol and diesel vehicles have been reduced since October 2025.

In January 2026, total registrations of battery-powered vehicles across all segments reached 2.18 lakh units, up from 1.71 lakh units in January 2025. This shows a strong and growing interest in EVs among Indian buyers.

Experts say the growth reflects increasing environmental awareness, government incentives, and better charging infrastructure, making electric vehicles more practical for everyday use.

The industry expects this trend to continue, with more affordable models and high-performance EVs expected to enter the market in the coming months.
