Julian Metherell to Succeed Ed Smith as Next MCC President
London [UK], May 7 (ANI): Julian Metherell, the current chair of London Spirit and a key figure in the franchise’s Hundred equity negotiations, has been named as the next president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He will take over from former England cricketer and selector Ed Smith in October.
A long-time MCC member with a background in global finance, Metherell brings decades of experience to the role. Previously, he worked at Goldman Sachs for 19 years, holding senior positions including chief executive officer of its UK investment banking division. He is also the founder and chief financial officer of Genel Energy, with interests in energy and shipping.
In addition to his financial career, Metherell has played a significant role in cricket administration. He served as non-executive chair of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) from 2019 to 2024 and currently chairs the advisory board at Cambridge University’s Judge Business School.
Metherell expressed his honor in accepting the role, stating it was a privilege to follow in the footsteps of his cricketing idols. He highlighted his deep connection to MCC and Lord’s, calling it an exciting time to be involved as the club enters a new era with its professional cricket team.
He played a central role in MCC’s negotiations for the 2025 Hundred equity sale, which saw a Silicon Valley consortium led by Nikesh Arora acquire a 49% stake in London Spirit for £145 million. Following the deal, Metherell was appointed chair of London Spirit when ownership transferred from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to the new group last year.
Ed Smith, who nominated Metherell as his successor, praised him for his business expertise and passion for cricket, calling him a trusted friend to the game.
Metherell’s appointment comes during a period of change for MCC, with London Spirit increasingly shaping the club’s direction. Earlier this year, the franchise unveiled a rebranded identity combining MCC’s traditional colors with royal blue.
During his tenure as president, Lord’s will host both the men’s and women’s Australian teams during the 2027 Ashes series. (ANI)
