Lani Pallister Defeats Katie Ledecky in Historic Swim
Australian swimmer Lani Pallister made history at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships by defeating Katie Ledecky, one of the most dominant swimmers in the sport. In the 800m freestyle event in Irvine, California, Pallister led from start to finish, securing a victory with a time of 8:06.10. Ledecky, who had never lost an international major final in this event before, finished second in 8:07.26.
Pallister’s win was a significant moment as she outpaced Ledecky, who has long been the queen of distance swimming. Ledecky, a nine-time Olympic gold medalist, had dominated the 800m freestyle since winning her first gold at the 2012 London Olympics. Her only previous loss in this event came in February 2024 against Canada’s Summer McIntosh.
Pallister, born on June 6, 2002, in Sydney, Australia, grew up around swimming. Her mother, Janelle Pallister, was a competitive swimmer who won Commonwealth Games gold in 1990. Her father, Rick, was also an accomplished athlete, and her godmother is Australian swimming legend Dawn Fraser. Despite health challenges, including heart surgery, Lani became an Olympic champion in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
After her historic win, Pallister showed sportsmanship by praising her rival. “Katie is such a dominant force,” she said. “Without her, women’s distance swimming wouldn’t be where it is today.” Ledecky remains one of the greatest swimmers but now faces growing competition. Pallister’s ability to lead and outperform her in major events shows the gap is closing.
This victory was part of a strong week for Pallister, who also won the 400m freestyle against Ledecky earlier in the meet. Her performance signals a bright future as she prepares for upcoming challenges, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
