Ma Ying-jeou Advocates Peaceful Resolution in China-Taiwan Relations

Former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou emphasized the potential for peaceful resolution of differences between Taiwan and China following his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Ma highlighted the shared historical and cultural ties between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and expressed hope for mutual understanding among young Taiwanese regarding these connections. Despite China’s claims over Taiwan as its territory and increased pressure, Ma stressed the importance of handling disputes peacefully.

His visit to Beijing, accompanied by a group of students, aimed to illustrate the common heritage shared by people on both sides, referencing historical lineage. However, Ma’s mention of “the Republic of China” in the presence of Xi Jinping underscored the sensitivity surrounding Taiwan’s official name in China’s eyes. While Ma remains influential within Taiwan’s Kuomintang (KMT), the party’s stance on maintaining close ties with China and advocating dialogue continues amidst ongoing tensions.
