Major Canals Desilted and 3,877 Roads Restored in Chennai

In preparations for the northeast monsoon, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has been diligently working on infrastructure improvements in Chennai. The GCC has accomplished the restoration of 3,877 roads and the desilting of 5.8 km of Mambalam Canal. The civic body identified areas vulnerable to canal blockages along the 33 canals and has deployed robotic excavators to clear these blockages.

Specifically, 11 vulnerable locations near culverts of Mambalam Canal have been identified for frequent clearing using these robotic excavators. To expedite road repair, Corporation Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan conducted night inspections in various areas, ensuring that roadworks and deep sewerage repairs were on track.

The GCC’s efforts are part of a broader initiative to enhance infrastructure and ensure the region’s readiness for the upcoming monsoon season. Over 11,000 roads have been addressed since June, with approximately 3,877 roads already completed.
