Maldives Parliamentary Elections Postponed to April

Following the ratification of a Bill by President Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives’ Parliamentary elections have been rescheduled for April 21. Originally slated for March 17, the deferment was requested by the opposition, citing Ramadan, observed from March 10 to April 9, as a month of prayer and fasting.

The move to postpone the polls comes after the Opposition, led by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), along with its breakaway faction The Democrats, voted to amend the General Elections Act to allow for the date change, emphasizing the significance of accommodating religious observances in electoral scheduling.
