Meteorological Department Forecasts Heavy Rain in Northern Tamil Nadu

The Meteorological Department anticipates a continuation of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu’s northern and delta districts over the next two days. Triggered by a cyclonic circulation off the Kerala coast, the northeast monsoon remains in a vigorous phase, promising moderate to heavy rain across the state until the weekend. In the past 24 hours, 45 locations experienced heavy rain, while two recorded extremely heavy showers, exceeding 20.4 cm.

Mettupalayam in Coimbatore received the highest rainfall at 37 cm, followed by Kil Kotagiri estate in the Nilgiris at 24 cm. The heavy rain belt is expected to shift to Tiruvallur, Ranipet, and Kancheepuram districts on Friday and cover more areas in the north and delta regions on Saturday.

The Meteorological Department is closely monitoring another weather system developing over the south Andaman Sea, which may intensify into a depression around Monday. Despite torrential downpours in Coimbatore and the Nilgiris, consistent rainfall is helping alleviate the rain deficit in Tamil Nadu, currently standing at 10% below the usual share since October 1.
