Neeraj Chopra Falls Short Again to Sri Lankan Pathirage
In another close match between India’s Neeraj Chopra and rising Sri Lankan star Rumesh Pathirage, Chopra narrowly missed overtaking his rival at the Lausanne Diamond League. After finishing second behind Pathirage at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Chopra came just 9 centimeters short this time, with a throw of 88.05 meters compared to Pathirage’s winning 88.14 meters.
This was Chopra’s best performance in over a year and his season’s best throw. However, Pathirage continued his strong form, securing first place with his third-round effort. Grenada’s Anderson Peters took third with 86.69 meters.
Chopra’s second-place finish moved him into fifth place in the Diamond League Finals standings, up from seventh earlier. The top six in each event will compete in the finals in Brussels, with additional wildcards possible. Pathirage and Peters have already qualified for the finals.
This was the third straight victory for Pathirage over Chopra this year. Their rivalry has been intense, with Pathirage winning in Doha and Glasgow as well. Chopra, returning from an injury, showed improvement but fell short once again.
Pathirage’s impressive season includes wins in Rome and Doha, with a record throw of 92.62 meters in Rome. He has dominated most competitions this year, while Chopra is working his way back after a long injury battle.
