Nepal Floods Kill at Least Eight

At least eight people were killed and many villages destroyed by massive flash floods in Nepal on August 26, 2026. The floods struck a region near Tibet, damaging roads, bridges, and power projects. Authorities warned of more casualties.

The worst-hit areas were Syapru Besi and Timure in Rasuwa district, home to about 50,000 people. Officials urged residents along the Bhote Koshi river to move to higher ground due to the risk of flooding.

District Administrator Narendra Pariyar said villages and infrastructure were washed away. He warned of possible heavy losses but could not confirm exact numbers yet.

The cause of the floods was unclear. Last year, a similar flood on the same river was linked to a drained glacier lake in Tibet. This year’s floods also damaged hydroelectric projects, disrupting electricity in the area.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah said rescue teams, police, and military were sent to help. He advised people living near the river to stay alert and move to safer areas.

The Bhote Koshi river flows from Tibet into Nepal’s Trishuli River, which eventually reaches India as the Gandak River. Last year’s floods on the same river killed nine people, destroyed a Friendship Bridge, and disrupted trade for months.
