No Venus vs. Serena Williams Match at US Open 2026 Women’s Singles

The US Open, the last Grand Slam of the year, will not feature a singles match between Venus and Serena Williams in women’s singles at Flushing Meadows in 2026. Both sisters were given wildcard entries for the event.

When Venus was granted her entry into the tournament at No. 46, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) initially reserved a spot for Serena. However, Serena chose to focus on doubles play instead of singles after returning from a break since 2022. As a result, the USTA awarded the final wildcard spot to American Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion.

In the draw, Venus Williams and Kenin ended up in the same section, setting them to face each other early in the tournament. Meanwhile, Serena’s return means she and Venus will be on the same side of the bracket for doubles play at a Grand Slam event for the first time since 2022.

The Williams sisters have a long history of success in doubles, including Olympic gold medals from Sydney 2000, Beijing 2008, and London 2012. Together, they’ve won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles. Their most recent doubles match together was at the Cincinnati Open earlier this year.

Notable players like World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz will defend his US Open title against Roman Safiullin. Alexander Zverev, the French Open champion and top seed in New York, will face Italian Lorenzo Sonego. Women’s defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will play Camila Osorio in her opening match.

In other highlights, World No. 3 Jessica Pegula will start against Elena-Gabriela Ruse, with a potential second-round clash against the winner of the Williams-Kenin match. Arthur Fils, fresh off a title win at Cincinnati, faces Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 US Open champion and a future retiree, will play Matteo Berrettini.
