Police Initiate Actions Against Accused in 2022 Ranchi Clashes

Jharkhand Police have begun taking action against individuals allegedly involved in the violent clashes that occurred on June 10, 2022, in Ranchi. The clashes erupted when a protest against a controversial statement made by then BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma about Prophet Muhammad turned violent. One accused has been arrested, and arrest warrants for 39 others have been sought from the court, holding them accountable for the violence.

During the protest, an altercation between the crowd and the police led to firing and lathi-charging, resulting in the death of three individuals. Over 50 people, including policemen, were injured, and property damage occurred. Muslim organizations have criticized the police action as “one-sided,” and in protest, the Muslim community has decided to keep shops and businesses closed on August 12.
