Rice Millers Advocate GST Waiver and Power Tariff Relief for Price Reduction

Rice millers in Tamil Nadu have appealed for the waiver of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on rice and the introduction of a separate reasonable power tariff slab for rice mills. According to D. Thulasingam, President of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners and Paddy Rice Dealers Association, the surge in power tariffs, escalating demand for super-fine rice varieties, GST imposition, and heightened transportation costs contribute to the escalating prices of rice in the market.

Federation Secretary A. C. Mohan emphasized the impact of increased power tariffs, urging the government to establish a distinct tariff slab for rice mills, considering the seasonal nature of the industry.

Thulasingam also highlighted the uniform GST imposition on all food grains, which was not the case before the GST regime, and suggested the removal of GST on rice. Additionally, concerns were raised about the continuous export of rice varieties, leading to heightened demand and market prices.
