Rumesh Pathirage: Sri Lanka’s Rising Javelin Star Challenges Neeraj Chopra

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage is making waves in men’s javelin. He recently won gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and also claimed victory at the Zurich Diamond League with a throw of 92.07 meters.

Pathirage outperformed India’s Neeraj Chopra at both events. At the Commonwealth Games, he threw 89.75 meters compared to Chopra’s 85.83 meters. In Switzerland’s Lausanne Diamond League, Pathirage again came first with a throw of 88.14 meters, while Chopra finished second with 88.05 meters.

Born on March 21, 2003, in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, Pathirage wasn’t always a javelin thrower. He started playing cricket as a fast bowler and reached speeds of 134 km/h. However, athletics eventually became his path to success.

Influenced by his father’s throwing events, Pathirage began javelin training in 2017. His progress was rapid: from throwing 30 meters initially, he reached 63 meters within two months.

By 2024, he won the men’s javelin title at the Asian Throwing Championships with a throw of 85.45 meters. A year later, he made history as the first Sri Lankan man to reach the World Athletics Championships final. Though he finished seventh in Tokyo, his performance was impressive.

In 2026, Pathirage achieved his biggest success. At the Rome Diamond League, he threw a record-breaking 92.62 meters, setting a new national record and joining an elite group of throwers above 90 meters.

His consistency continued in Doha and Ostrava, where he won titles before securing Commonwealth Games gold with 89.75 meters. Pathirage admires Neeraj Chopra for his consistency and Arshad Nadeem for his power, but aims to follow Chopra’s example of repeatedly achieving high throws.

This rising star is now a serious rival on the global stage, challenging the dominance of javelin legends.
