School Roof Collapse Kills 34 Children in Pakistan
A tragic school roof collapse in Peshawar, Pakistan, on October 15, 2026, reportedly killed at least 34 children and one teacher. The incident took place at Al-Khair School in Dir Colony, a busy residential area of the city. The disaster left several students injured and led to a major rescue operation involving emergency services and other agencies.
According to reports, the roof collapsed during afternoon classes while students were inside the school. Several children became trapped beneath the fallen structure, prompting an immediate rescue effort. The victims were reportedly all under the age of 13, making the incident especially heartbreaking for their families and the local community.
Hospital spokesperson Muhammad Asim said that 32 children and one teacher had died at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH). Two additional bodies were reportedly taken to Naseerullah Khan Babar Memorial Hospital. Twenty injured students received medical treatment and were discharged after receiving first aid, while three students with serious injuries remained in hospital for further care.
Following the incident, Lady Reading Hospital declared an emergency to treat the injured and manage the casualties. Rescue workers faced difficulties reaching the school because it was located in narrow streets. Despite these challenges, emergency personnel, army members and other agencies worked together to search the damaged building and rescue those trapped inside.
Initial reports indicated that the school was operating from a three-storey building with a poorly constructed roof. The school’s owner was reportedly operating the institution as an education trust and had been arrested over concerns about poor construction. Authorities are expected to examine the building’s condition and determine whether safety rules were ignored.
Peshawar Deputy Commissioner Afaq Wazir ordered an investigation into the collapse to establish the exact cause of the disaster. Provincial Education Secretary Inayatullah Waseem also requested a detailed report by October 16, 2026. Police officials said the location of the school had made rescue operations more difficult and indicated that possible safety violations would be investigated.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed their condolences to the families of the children and the teacher who lost their lives. They also wished the injured students a speedy recovery and directed the authorities to ensure that they received proper medical treatment. Other officials also expressed their support for the affected families.
Building collapses have raised repeated concerns in Pakistan, where weak construction, poor-quality materials and failure to follow building regulations can create serious safety risks. Schools require particular attention because they accommodate large numbers of children every day.
The tragedy in Peshawar has renewed calls for stricter building inspections, stronger safety regulations and regular checks of school buildings. A thorough investigation will be important to identify those responsible and help prevent similar incidents in the future.
