‘This Time, Hockey World Cup Will Be Ours’ – Salima Tete Before India’s Opener

After winning the FIH Nations Cup recently, the Indian women’s hockey team is riding high on confidence heading into the FIH World Cup 2026. Despite being placed in a tough Pool D alongside China, England, and South Africa, the team remains determined to make history.

India has a long legacy in men’s hockey, with eight Olympic titles, but the women’s team has faced many challenges over the years. Since the first Women’s World Cup in 1974, India has only competed in eight of the 15 editions so far. Their best finish was fourth place in 1974.

Captain Salima Tete is confident this time will be different. “This World Cup is ours,” she said. “We will play smart and attacking hockey and bring back a medal.” This is her second World Cup, and she believes the team’s focus will be on winning every match with a clear plan.

India’s recent success at the FIH Nations Cup has boosted their morale. Tete highlighted the role of younger players like Sakshi Rana and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, who bring energy and determination to the team. “When they say, ‘Didi, we have to push hard and play good hockey,’ it inspires us,” she added.

The World Cup will take place in the Netherlands and Belgium from August 15 to 30. With the Asian Games also approaching, the team knows they face tough competition but remains ready for the challenge.
