Three Newborns Die in Fire at Government Hospital
A tragic fire broke out at the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of District Women’s Hospital in Amravati, Maharashtra, early Monday morning, August 24, 2026. The fire started at around 3:30 a.m. on the third floor of the government hospital.
According to initial information, the fire reportedly began after a ventilator exploded and caught fire inside the newborn care unit. The flames quickly spread smoke through the area, creating a dangerous situation for the babies and hospital staff.
Sadly, three newborn babies died in the incident. The babies suffered severe burns and were also affected by smoke inhalation.
At the time of the fire, 39 newborn babies were admitted to the SNCU. Hospital staff and emergency teams immediately began moving the babies to safety. Six babies were rescued from the affected area during the emergency evacuation.
Firefighters reached the hospital and managed to control the fire within around 10 to 15 minutes. Hospital staff worked quickly to move the babies away from the affected area and provide them with emergency medical care.
Some of the babies who were affected by the incident were shifted to another hospital for further treatment. Four children are currently receiving medical treatment, while one of them is reported to be in serious condition. Doctors are closely monitoring the condition of the injured babies.
The incident has caused shock and sadness among the families of the newborns and the local community. Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of the three babies. He offered his condolences to their families and prayed for the recovery of the injured children.
The minister also ordered an inquiry into the incident to find out exactly how the fire started and whether there were any safety failures. Authorities have been asked to ensure that the injured babies receive proper and immediate medical treatment.
The Maharashtra government has assured the families of the deceased babies that they will receive full support. Officials are also expected to review safety arrangements at the hospital following the tragedy.
