UAE Probes Flydubai Incident for Terrorism Links

The United Arab Emirates has launched an investigation into the recent emergency landing of a Flydubai flight, with authorities examining whether the incident could have been connected to terrorism.

The incident involved Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when it was forced to make an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The flight was diverted after the co-pilot allegedly attacked and stabbed the captain inside the cockpit.

Following the incident, the UAE Attorney-General formed a specialised investigation team to establish what happened and determine whether the attack was motivated by terrorism or involved any prior planning.

According to the initial account, the aircraft was operating normally when the co-pilot allegedly attacked Captain Smit Machchhar. Despite being injured, the captain managed to fight back and open the cockpit door. Passengers and members of the crew then assisted in restraining the co-pilot.

The aircraft subsequently landed safely in Tabuk, where Saudi authorities provided assistance following the emergency. The UAE has taken the lead in the investigation because the aircraft is registered in the country and has thanked Saudi Arabia for its cooperation.

Investigators are expected to examine the co-pilot’s background, actions during the flight and any possible motive behind the attack. Authorities are also looking into whether there was any advance planning or connection to an outside organisation.

Meanwhile, India has also been closely following the condition of Captain Machchhar. India’s Ambassador to the UAE, Dr. Deepak Mittal, visited the captain’s family in Dubai and offered support. The Indian government has assured the family that assistance will be provided as the investigation and the captain’s recovery continue.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further details once more information is established.
